According to the earliest history I found so far. Dragons birthed from Typhon and Echidna, Typhon and Echidna where father and mother off all monsters. Typhon was the son of Gaia but there are a few different stories to which his birth took place.
There is a version were Hera bore Typhon, out of anger that Zeaus had given birth by him self to Athena. Hera prayed to Gaia for a son that was as strong as Zeus and apparently slapped the ground and became pregnant. Once Hera had given birth to Typhon she gave him to the Serpent Python to raise him.
If Typhon and Echidna were real then this couple would of birthed dragons in their caves. From all I have read Typhons birth place was Cilicia (Cilicia extended along the Mediterranean coast east from Pamphylia, to the Amanus Mountains, which separated it from Syria).
So where did they go?
Many stories speak of dragons being flayed or just outright killed, Some mention dragons evolved on one thing I read it states that maybe some dragons over millions of years became human like. With all the different variations, the mythological stories of dragons seem to be mentioned in many countries all around the world. Probably born from all the caves that leave the earth then the Human race became stronger and multiplied and built up that dragons ceased to exist, evolved (some Japanese myths say that a gecko has the same gene as a dragon) or just hiding out for now.
